At the Science Festival in Edinburgh, City Art Centre, Market Street 9th April 2016. I took a video of a giant bubble machine, music and background noise.
“You don’t test a gentle person the way that you don’t steep tea for too long. Submerge me and I will imbue, and what was sweet will be bitter. I will be strong on your tongue and unpleasant to the taste, you’ll regret drowning me in your guile. My gentleness is not for your taking.”
“We must be ready to be astonished, even when it is uncomfortable and morally expensive.”
On reading poetry
“I am astonished, disappointed, pleased with myself. I am distressed, depressed, rapturous. I am all of these things at once, and cannot add up the sum.”
C.G. Jung – Memories, Dreams, Reflections
“I think I’ve had your music and words in me for decades…I mean this word I use, “hyperobject” for instance, it sounds like one of your words. You have so many nonhuman beings in your work, both obviously alive and not so obviously. I tend to see things in an animistic way. I try to argue that everything is alive (or undead…almost as good!).
from a series of letter exchanges with Bjork
“Cosmos is a Greek word for the order of the universe. It is, in a way, the opposite of Chaos. It implies the deep interconnectedness of all things. It conveys awe for the intricate and subtle way in which the universe is put together.”
“Step into this experience with butterflies in your bones; with a nervous feeling so beautiful, you know you’re doing something right.”
“An artist can show things that other people are terrified of expressing.”
